Donavon O'Brien
February 06, 2025

Donavon Edward O'Brien, man of remarkable resilience, passed away on January 27, 2025, at the Valley Care and Rehabilitation of Barnesville, Minnesota, at the age of 84. Born on April 5, 1940, in the quaint town of Havana, North Dakota, Donavon lived a life of independence on a path traveled by few.
In 1958, he was joined in matrimony with Vernalee Nygaard, a union that brought forth three children: Kelly, who resides in Dent, MN, Paige, of Moorhead, and Nathan of Albertville. Donavon's legacy was further extended through his 5 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. After a sojourn in New Mexico, they returned to the embrace of Minnesota in 1968, where Donavon further rooted himself in his work and personal pursuits.
A man of many trades, Donavon built a career across diverse fields that showcased his industrious spirit. He made significant contributions through road construction, owned a Texaco gas station in New Mexico, and held various sales positions near Dent. Yet, it was his years as a farmer that resonated deeply within his soul, where he forged a connection with the land that revealed his commitment to hard work and perseverance. Later in life, he and his second wife, Sherry King, would operate the O'Brien Shirts company in Pelican Rapids, a venture that highlighted both their entrepreneurial spirit and their shared devotion to the community.
Retirement afforded Donavon the opportunity to indulge in his longtime passions, embracing the tranquility of gardening and the joy of bird watching. Donavon's legacy, however, extends beyond his professions and hobbies. He was predeceased by his parents, Edward and Luella (Lehmann) O'Brien, a brother, Eleldon O'Brien, his daughter-in-law, Pam O'Brien and his sister-in-law, Cecilia O'Brien.
As we reflect on the life of Donavon Edward O'Brien, we remember a man whose unique character defined his years. He leaves behind a rich tapestry of memories woven through the hearts of those who were fortunate to share in his journey.
